Painting is a bringing out of that which was previously invisible. A decision is made as to what is most needed at the time that the work is done, what most needs to come forth. The oil paintings shown here demonstrate how this need changes at different periods in the artists life. Certain themes remain consistent, the heightened awareness of color relationships, for example and the freedom of application with regards to the paint. Other aspects such as the shift in focus between outer phenomenon and inner phenomena vary greatly from time to time.
Life drawing is an intrinsic part of the artistic tradition and is a dynamic tool that trains the eye and sharpens all manner of creative skills. Working from a living human being brings a new level of focus and vitality to the creative process. Because we have an internal sense of what the human body looks like, life drawing provides constant feedback on the accuracy or inaccuracy of our drawing in a way that is not possible with the landscape. If a part of the figure is out of proportion it becomes glaringly obvious and forces us to look more carefully, further honing our skills.
The intention of this work is to bring focus to that in our experience that is fresh and beautiful, and to celebrate that creative process which connects us to the part of our being that is fluid, vivacious, effervescent and unpredictable.
